About Clarke County
Clarke County was originally part of Jackson until separated by a Georgia General Assembly act at the end of 1801. It got its name from a Revolutionary War hero, Elijah Clarke. A monument in his honor was erected in the middle of Broad Street in Athens that still stands today. Watkinsville served as the County Seat until 1871 when all the county offices and businesses, including the courts and jails, moved northward to Athens.
The Georgia General Assembly also established the University of Georgia in Athens and the population began to grow alongside the university. Plantations in Clarke County produced an abundance of agricultural products. The cotton industry prospered bringing manufacturing and textile production into prominence in Clarke County, particularly with the arrival of the railroad to the area in 1841.
