Oconee County, GA
Living in Oconee County offers a unique situation in that it has pastoral rural areas, yet it is located next to a first-class State University, the University of Georgia, and has a road network providing access to all areas of the state.
Originally Oconee County was formed from part of the territory ceded by the Cherokee Indians to the State of Georgia and part of what was Clarke County. When the county seat of Clarke County was moved from Watkinsville to Athens, Oconee County was created by a legislative act in 1875.

Oconee Historical Highlights
The Elder Mill Covered Bridge, built in 1897, is located four miles south of Watkinsville on Highway 15, and carries traffic across Rose Creek. The bridge was built by Nathaniel and David Richardson offsite and then was moved to the current site in the 1920s. This bridge is just one of only a few bridges in use in Georgia that does not have the benefit of underlying steel beams for support.
Central School House is a two-story structure which was typical of rural independent schools found in Georgia prior to the 1950's. In 2007 the old school was relocated to Oconee Heritage Park as the centerpiece of the "History Village" project.
