The University of Georgia - Background
The University of George is rich in history. It became the first state-chartered university in the county in January of 1785. By an act of the General Assembly of 1784, 40,000 acres were set aside for a seminary of learning. By 1931 all state-supported institutions, including the University of Georgia were placed under what is known as the University System of Georgia and is governed by a board of regents.
The University of Georgia influenced the community of Athens which sprang up in 1806, five years after the University of Georgia had officially opened for classes. The name Athens came from the role of Athens, Greece which had been an intellectual center. The more cultured social life around the university was instrumental in drawing wealthy families to the town.
After the Civil War, the Reconstruction period was devastating for the South. And while Athens was spared the destruction in many parts of the South, it was knocked back on its heels. However the leadership from the University helped Athens regain its momentum.
In the 20th century, the University continued to positively impact the town of Athens when it became an internationally recognized educational and research institution. And today the university continues to influence the lifestyle, pace, and outlook of the community of Athens, GA.
